Case Study

An Oregon city used SFE Global, together with INGU Pipers, to detect leaks, air pockets, and debris in a 16-inch sewer force main. Results identified significant air pockets and debris causing a 16% capacity reduction in the pipeline.

The Challenge

After performing a condition assessment of their sewer pump station, the City and their consultant looked to the force main as the likely candidate for why they were seeing reduced pumping capacity on one of its crucial sewer force mains, a 16-inch ductile iron pipe stretching 2,300 feet. The city needed to address two primary concerns to ensure the optimal performance of this vital infrastructure:

  • Air Pockets: Were there air pockets trapped within the force main that could be impacting the flow capacity or pump station performance?
  • Debris and Tuberculation: Was there considerable tuberculation or other debris obstructions within the pipe that could be reducing its flow capacity?

The presence of air pockets could lead to inefficiencies and potential corrosion due to the accumulation of hydrogen sulfide gas, while debris and scale build-up could significantly reduce the pipe’s capacity, impacting the overall efficiency of the sewer system.

The Solution

To tackle these issues, the city partnered with SFE Global to utilize the advanced capabilities of INGU Pipers, a free-floating inline survey tool designed to collect critical pipeline information. This tool was ideal for identifying leaks, air pockets, pressure profiles, debris, and scaling within the pipeline.

INGU Pipers Capabilities:
  • Leak Detection: Identifying any existing leaks within the pipeline.
  • Air Pocket Detection: Locating air pockets that could impact flow capacity and cause corrosion.
  • Pressure Profile: Measuring pressure 100 times per second to provide a detailed pressure profile.
  • Debris and Scale Assessment: Detecting areas with significant debris or scale build-up.
  • Magnetic Survey: Assessing magnetic anomalies that could locate unknown fittings/features and/or indicate pipe spools with signs of deterioration.
Implementing the Solution

SFE Global deployed the INGU Pipers tool to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the sewer force main. The tool provided data on the pressure profile, hydraulic grade line (HGL), air pockets, leaks, and debris/scale.

Key Findings:
  • Debris Assessment: The assessment revealed debris restrictions equal to a 16% reduction in pipe capacity. Specifically, debris build-up was identified between 140 and 265 feet.
  • Air Pocket Assessment: A large, continuous air pocket was detected at the bridge crossing, which could lead to corrosion from hydrogen sulfide gas accumulations. Another air pocket was sensed at the ARV location, indicated the air valve may be plugged or in need of repair.

The Results

The detailed assessment conducted by SFE Global using INGU Pipers provided crucial insights into the condition of the sewer force main:

  • No Leaks Detected: The pipeline was found to be free of leaks, ensuring the integrity of the pipe.
  • Air/Gas Pockets Detected: Several significant air pockets were located, particularly near the bridge crossing high point, necessitating targeted interventions to prevent corrosion.
  • Debris and Scale Build-Up: The assessment highlighted 125 feet of the pipeline near the pump station with reduced capacity due to debris or scale.

Based on these findings, the city was able to plan for progressive pig cleaning to remove debris and scale. This would be followed by a high-resolution inspection to assess the detailed pipe wall condition and determine the remaining usable life of the pipeline.

Conclusion

The partnership with SFE Global and the utilization of INGU Pipers technology allowed the city to gain a comprehensive understanding of their sewer force main's condition. By identifying air pockets and debris build-up, the city could take proactive measures to maintain and improve the pipeline’s efficiency and longevity.
